America school days are either here or are fast approaching!

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Back to School is here! Although we are still enjoying hot summer days and warm summer evenings, all across America school days are either here or are fast approaching!  Moms across the United States are doing silent celebrations while at the same time dealing with the anxiety of the dreaded back-to-school routine.  Sure many of your children have continued to practice their math and reading skills during the summer, enjoyed summer camp, or played with friends at the community pool, but they have also had a few months of well deserved down time to rest and entertain themselves and let a few brain cobwebs collect!  By now their batteries are recharged and it’s time to start thinking about the rat race of the school year again.

Here are some tips from Harvard Pediatrician, Dr. Victoria McEvoy, on back to school preparation for the entire family:

1. Do a mental walk through of the weekly schedule to avoid the crazy school morning chaos.  Have your kids (and you as well if you’re working) practice getting ready for school and work so you can plan departure times to allow for a peaceful and on time arrival at school and work.

2. Arrange carpools and negotiate driving duties with your spouse or neighbor ahead of time.

3. Your kids are not going to be happy if they can stay up to 11:00 one night and have to be in bed by 8:00 the next night. Slowly reintroducing your regular bedtime and wake-up schedules prior to school starting so everyone is used to the change.

In addition to purchasing the school clothes, new backpack, and school supplies, have them pick out a new alarm clock to practice the responsibility of getting themselves up. Also have them get dressed and eat breakfast when they get up, instead of playing and watching TV.

4.Schools require immunizations and health forms. Many after school athletic programs require a physical. Get your appointment scheduled early and be sure to renew your child’s medications at the visit. Don’t forget permission forms for the school for any medication that has to be given at school, as many require a physician signature for these.

5. Children often have anxiety at the start of school. If possible plan back to school with a friend and practice the routine for dropping off, where to go for after school day care, and picking up. Establish a plan for weather related closures and emergencies.

6. Include family exercise every day. It can be challenging to get outdoor activity once the weather turns colder, but it is much easier if the family builds a schedule each day around physical outdoor activity. Biking, swimming, walking, baseball, soccer, tennis, and basketball are all activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family. If you have a family dog, include the kids in the daily walks.

7. Control the junk food. We all love to eat ice cream and hot dogs in the summer not to mention salty chips, but summer is a good time to build good eating habits. Fresh fruits and vegetables are readily available and this is a habit we should carry into the fall.

8. If your kids aren’t back to school yet, an hour a day of reading will encourage a wonderful addiction to books and help ease into the school year. If your child does not yet read, include story hour at bedtime.

9. Limit television watching

10. Plan Something Fun.  Labor Day Weekend is right around the corner.  Let your kids know that while the routines of homework and early to bed – early to rise are back in session, fun is still in store with a family activity or getaway for the last long weekend of summer.

A little planning goes a long way to making the transition of back to school easier for the kids. Ideally the children will be well rested, fit, and maybe a little ready to get back in the routine.  Back to school can also be a stressful time for the parents but at Campbell Homes, we’ve taken some of the stress of back to school away by building in only the finest neighborhoods and award winning school districts like Academy School District 20 and Falcon School District 49.  For additional information on Colorado Springs’ schools, visit a Campbell Homes sales consultant for information on neighborhood schools for each Campbell Homes community.

WHAT MAKES A HOUSE A HOME?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Campbell Homes Colorado Springs, make your house a home. Interior picture of the living room. What makes a house of home is absolutely not about the stuff that goes into the house but about the memories that are created by celebrating holidays and special occasions; the safety and security of being with loved ones; the quiet evenings after a hectic day at the office; family dinners around noisy dining room tables or at TV trays in front of the evening news!  Home is about people and what we do to make our houses home.

So maybe the real question should be what makes a house a more comfortable home?  Or, what makes a house a place you want to call home?

To answer these questions we connected with a number of sources to help us explore design trends for today’s homebuyers seeking comfort, livability, and style.

Trend 1: A Home’s Curb Appeal Still Increases Property Value: Curb appeal as always was at the top of the list as an important consideration for homebuyers, regardless of the price range. Curb appeal ensures your home will make a great first impression about who you are and where you are in life.

Trend 2: Kitchens and Bathrooms Never Go Out of Style: Kitchens and bathrooms are always a selling point for homeowners. If you’re going to upgrade, consider doing it in your kitchen and master bathroom.  Personalize with unique tiles, wall finishes, flooring, and paint. Even small changes such as a shower upgrade or upgraded appliances can be a nice touch.

Traditional Kitchens and Bathrooms Take the Style Lead: Although contemporary designs are still in demand, traditional styles are at the height of popularity. Naturals like brown, off white and bone are common and the Shaker style cabinets appear to be gaining popularity.

Lose the Standard Kitchen Faucet: Flexible pullout faucets and pot-filler faucets in nickel are extremely popular. In additional to making life easier, cool kitchen faucets let you express yourself without breaking the bank!

Simple Fixtures and Sinks Work Best in the Bath: According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, simple white bathroom fixtures continue to be the most popular color.  Find other ways to personalize your new home with designer sinks, cabinetry and countertops.

Bathroom Floors in Ceramic Tile and Vanity Tops in Natural Stone: When surveyed, ceramic and porcelain tile flooring continued to come out on top. Natural stone such as granite, quartz and marble, promise to be the top choices for kitchen counters and bathroom vanities.

Cherry on Top: Cherry remains the most popular wood for kitchen cabinetry, followed closely by maple. As for the finishes placed on those cabinets, medium natural, dark natural and glazed are the most desired choices among interior designers.  But interesting, white painted cabinetry is back on the radar – can we say “1990s”! In decline are other colors of painted cabinetry and light natural finishes and distressed finishes.

Undercounter Refrigeration:  French door and freezer-bottom are the most popular styles of refrigerators.  A surprising trend is the extent to which wine refrigerators are specified by half of all kitchen designers.

A Range of Cooking Options:
The combination cooktop and wall oven is continuing to overtake the tried-and-true workhorse of the kitchen, the range! Gas is growing in popularity for cooking method and energy efficiency, particularly in western states like Colorado.

Trend 3: Open floor plans. Homes with kitchens that open up to the dining room, that open to the family room are very popular. Such layouts, which have come into vogue in the last decade, are trendy with homebuyers who enjoy entertaining at home; another trend impacted by the economy. Instead of expensive dinners out, more homeowners are inviting friends and family in, creating demand for open living spaces.

Trend 4:  Dual home offices. Thanks to two-income couples in which both individuals work from home, there has been a rise in demand for extra office space. In many cases, couples with no children still require three bedrooms because they require additional office space.

Trend 5: Extending the indoors outside. According to the AIA’s, buyers want to make full use of their living space, including outdoor areas. That means outdoor living options such as fire pits, kitchens and, in some cases, sleeping accommodations are especially desirable, allowing buyers to enjoy as much of their property as possible.

Homebuyers today want to maximize their usable space. According to Cyberhomes.com, Massive is out and smaller homes with higher-end features are in.  Gone are wine cellars and special function rooms like dual master bedrooms and extravagant home theaters; in are main level master suites, home offices and “green” features (as long as they don’t drive the price of the home way up).

Today’s savvy homebuyers are more conservative than they’ve been in the past and less willing to risk investing their finances in a massive home. Instead, want functional spaces that are well designed, less expensive to maintain, and that match how they live now.
